Harting - When do field-attachable connectors make sense?

Field-attachable connectors offer flexible and simple solutions for installing and maintaining electrical connections on site, without special tools. These connectors find application in various sectors, such as factory automation, wind energy, rail vehicles and building installations, where reliable and robust connections are needed without extensive planning. Using these connectors requires only basic tools, such as a side cutter, screwdriver and pliers, enabling quick repairs without new crimp contacts or specialised tools.

Unlike non-field-attachable connectors, which often use crimping techniques, field-attachable connectors offer more flexibility by allowing existing cables to be used. They are ideal for situations where small quantities are needed or where quick repairs are required. Moreover, they can be used for upgrades during the lifetime of a machine, such as changing the IP protection class or improving EMC protection.

For large-scale applications, however, it is more efficient to prefabricate complete cable assemblies, using automatic crimping machines to handle large quantities of contacts. Field-attachable connectors are also useful for quick upgrades, such as increasing bandwidth, as they can be easily modified without replacing the entire cable.

In short, field-attachable connectors offer practical solutions for various industries, where ease of installation and flexibility are essential for minimising downtime and optimising system performance.
