Siemens introduces the new generation of variable speed drives
With the Sinamics G220 series, Siemens further expands its portfolio of AC drives. The series includes several variants, including the addition of an IP55 variant and a Clean Power version where harmonics can be reduced by up to 97 per cent without external chokes.
The Sinamics G220 variable speed drives position themselves as the most high-end and all-round within the Siemens portfolio. Many functions and components are integrated as standard or can be added via option modules, making the inverters very flexible and versatile. Additions such as an IP55 variant, standard 3C3 coating, monitoring of ATEX motors and an encoder input make the drives suitable for a wide range of sectors such as: offshore, chemicals, oil and gas, food, pharmaceuticals and automotive.
The Sinamics G220 controllers also meet the highest safety and security requirements. For example, the controllers are optimally protected against (network) manipulation and hostile firmware thanks to standard integrity and authenticity checks and adjustable access levels for different users. For maximum machine safety, multiple safety functions are programmable whereby the highest safety level (SIL 3/ PLe) can be achieved without additional hardware.
In addition, the Sinamics G220 controllers enable very high energy efficiency of drive systems. Highly efficient IE4, IE5 and synchronous reluctance motors as well as permanent magnet synchronous motors can be controlled by the inverter. Brake energy can also be distributed towards other drives via a DC bus coupling. Later, the series will be extended with a variant that can feed (braking) energy directly back to the grid.
The Sinamics G220 inverters are also the first inverters to be part of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio. Thanks to TIA portal integration and the full-fledged digital twin, drive performance can be tested and optimised before the hardware is physically present. This contributes to a shorter and more efficient engeering process. Moreover, the Sinamics G220 is expandable with a new IIOT module for easy integration into cloud and edge applications.
