Sick - SPEETEC is a new generation sensor for motion control
It records the movement of a moving surface or object without contact with the surface. This does not even require a scale or landmark. This allows speed, length and direction to be measured on almost any surface and opens up new possibilities for motion control. Especially in applications where direct, tactile measurement is not possible due to fragile or soft surfaces that can be damaged. But the sensor can also offer significant benefits in existing encoder and measuring wheel applications, especially when speed and acceleration requirements increase. It can also reduce maintenance caused by wear of encoder wheels and other system components due to tactile measurement.
The SPEETEC is also used as an encoder application with fast and dynamic processes that are even totally unsuitable for encoders. The sensor can be monitored and its logic functions configured via a simple interface.
Listing examples of applications would take too far. Hence an example from the food & beverage industry and more specifically in packaging: in vertical forming, filling and sealing machines, packaging film is unrolled from a roll before being formed and sealed. Here, the Speetec detects the speed of the packaging film to ensure that the feed has the required length. As a result, the Speetec also reduces waste in start-stop and continuous production.
